The McCune Mansion, Estate Of The Day

I am a sucker for a good real estate story and today's estate definitely has one. The McCune mansion which was built in the 1960s by an oil tycoon, Walker McCune, has 53,000 square feet of space and sits on six hilltop acres. The home was most recently owned by the eccentric Geordie Hormel, heir to the Hormel Foods fortune. Hormel who died last year, was a successful music producer in Los Angeles and also owned the Wrigley Mansion in Chicago. The home has a ballroom with a giant crystal chandelier, multiple kitchens, an ice-skating rink, 150-seat theater, dark room, beauty salon and more. The home was originally listed at $25 million. It sits now at $20 million but I bet it might go much lower. Especially since the home is said to be in fixer-upper shape. After the jump, what can be done with this massive home?

At what point does someone say to themselves: "boy, I'd really love to live in an office complex that resembles an out of date Hilton hotel, wouldn't that be great".
Ah what else would someone expect from an heir to the Spam fortune! Utterly amazing that it is worth even $1 million - razing it to make use of the decent perch will cost the new owner a few million. So essentially making an empty land parcel worth $4 million which is more in line with the market there.
If they get anything near what they want it should go into a real estate record book ...

I totally disagree with Spectacular B. I have always wanted my bathroom to look like a high school bathroom.

Clearly for the recluse or the agoraphobic buyer. No reason to ever leave home and associate with the outside world when you've got your own hair salon!! Good grief. There is a difference between "luxury" and absolute greed.
I agree with Spectator...give all the interior fixtures to Habitat for Humanity and bring on the wrecking ball. A few beautiful, tasteful, luxury homes on that site would be a much better investment.

if you had ever set foot upon this property you would certainly be talking a different game, and if you had ever met Geordie you would be as humbled by your comments as he was as a human. This property was built with such stature and strength that no mear wrecking ball could even begin to make a dent... you would have to blast it into kingdom come to remove it.

This mansion- the Mccune-Hall mansion was originally built as a 23,000 sf house by Walter Mccune, then finished with a 30,000 sf addition by my ex-girlfriends father, Gordon Hall. I have additional photos if you would like to see.
