Kalorama Heights, Estate of the Day
Today's estate is one of the many historic one of Washington D.C.'s great residences. This brick and limestone mansion is on Embassy Row with many of its well-appointed brethren. The home has six bedrooms and a formal style that is lightened up by a new kitchen and the current owner's taste for contemporary art. The luxe touches here are beautiful; the staircase landing is dominated by a grand piano and an inlaid wood rug. Marble fireplaces and crystal chandeliers appear in almost every room. And oh how we love a home with a good library; this one has a wood-paneled beauty. I also love the older elevator with the little red velvet, gold-tasseled tuffiet for sitting on. For your money you don't get much outdoor space, just a small bricked in area with a table. This home is listed at $5.495 million.

I was in this house a few weeks ago. Something that you cannot tell from the Sotheby's info is that the elevator opens in the bedrooms, especially the master bedroom...I guess that'd be helpful if you were unwell or in a wheelchair,
but as it is it seemed rather "off" to me.
You couldn't relocate the bedrooms easily because the bathrooms are located appropriately to the current layout.
For example, the kitchen, which is good, is on the lowest level...to serve in the dining room you'd have to walk across the whole house, take the elevator up, then walk across the whole house to reach the dining room...the house needs a bit of work too, tho not a massive bit.
It is a nice house, but oddly laid out...it is also a few doors from the Woodrow Wilson house (tourists) and a mostly open 100 or so feet from Mass Ave, NW, which is a very, very busy (loud) street.
Still, one could do worse in DC.
