Cary Point, Estate of the Day

This one in Cohasset, Massachusetts is an interesting example of what happens when an older house meets a new owner with a taste for the modern. This home sits on a promontory called Cary's Point, which overlooks Sandy Cove. The current owners bought the home around 2003 for about $4.75 million and gave it a total renovation and expansion. Believe it or not, this home was built in 1903-04 but has been completely renovated with new floors, new windows, new heating, audio, video and lighting systems and more. The details here are pretty fantastic; the kitchen counter for example appears to be composed of agate slices. The windows are all custom made with curving metal accents. There is not just a heated three-car detached garage but also a two-car garage with a turntable floor so the owner never has to back out of the garage again. The reflecting pool has a huge sculpture. The current owners have a taste for modern design and so the home is currently a showcase for all sorts of contemporary furniture and an expansive art collection. The property has a dining patio and gazebo with perfect views of the water. The property has access to two private beaches and two moorings. The owner is even offering his 46-foot Sunseeker powerboat along with the estate. The estate is listed at $19.5 million with Dean and Hamilton.

Compare and contrast 'Cary Point' to another MA waterfront home, of a similar Mediterranean-style villa, but modernized for today: 'Swallow Cave' listed for $4.95M.

Clearly with 'Swallow Cave' its demonstrated that the more contemporary feel doesn't have to be in such contrast (if not outright conflict) as it is with 'Cary Point'.

Nice. I'm disappointed that there's hardly anything left of the historical character, internal to the structure, but at least they had a uniform vision, and didn't go halfway. It's got a nice new character, and I had to double check it was really that old.

What a perfect example of the phrase "more money than taste"...

I agree. Not a single corner welcoming enough to curl up with a good book. And as for for the flower / lotus looking chairs -- one or two is whimsy. A whole fleet of them is ugly. I do like the agate counter tops, though.

The house is beautiful but the furnishings definitely do not belong.
That giant sculpture embodies the problem: a giant scabrous hand reaching for a brass ring -- and missing, to fall back feebly.
p.s. did you see the toilet and tub? Please tell me those windows are silvered to be one way.

p.p.s. I hereby nickname this "Crazy Point." :)

Brings back memories of Catherine O'hara in Beetle Juice.
