Balenciaga Shoulder Bag, Handbag of the Day!

Balenciaga is well known for creating avant-garde bags, their designs are always on the cutting edge of fashion and as far as quality, their extraordinary craftsmanship is unsurpassed. This chic new Balenciaga shoulder bag is so refreshing and different. I love the interesting combination of both black and tan leather. The straps are comprised of buckles, a creative twist on the usual use of hardware. Available online exclusively from matchesfashion.com for $2,400.

Zagliani Structured Handbag, Handbag of the Day

If you want to drop some serious cash on a handbag, Zagliani is the line you should be looking at. They've re-invented the crocodile purse countless times, each one builds on the last design and looks more fabulous than it's predecessor. This years bright purple structured handbag is my favorite Zagliani yet. I love the color, the shape, the stiff straps, it looks so proud! So if I had an extra $10,296.68 laying around (*gasp*) you better believe this purse would be my senseless summer splurge for '08. Available online, matchesfashion.com.

LVMH Chief Bullish on Luxury Brands

Bernard Arnault, chairman of luxury goods monolith LVMH, says that despite dire economic predictions and reports of a falloff in parts of the luxury sector the company expects profits to actually improve in 2008. "We are in a position to meet our objectives for a sharp rise in earnings in 2008," Arnault just announced at LVMH's annual shareholders meeting, according to Women's Wear Daily. "Every time we've been [in a difficult economy] we've increased market share. We've started the year strong. We will not pull off [of the accelerator]. We are focused on innovating."

Arnault, whose company recently added Swiss watchmaker Hublot to its portfolio of luxury brands, singled out handbags as a strong earner. "There are tons of new leather goods," he declared. "The Richard Prince bag for Vuitton" - one of our Handbags of the Day -- "has been an immense success and we won't be able to meet demand," Arnault said. "We can't produce the pieces fast enough." He also predicted strong sales this year for Fendi, calling it "one of the most important Italian brands on the market," and Dior as well -- no doubt thanks to Charlize Theron's captivating fragrance ads (above).

The Chloe Python Bay Bag, Handbag of the Day

The perfect addition to your summer/spring handbag collection has arrived! The Chloe Python Bay Bag is the bag du jour, in demand and stylish it features thick quilted ivory leather giving it a sturdy look and feel. Accents include visible stitching, a plaque on the front, feet on the bottom and over sized zipper pulls all done in gold. I love all the pockets on this bag, and the fact that everything zips tightly shut. Overall a very usable and chic purse that won't go out of style with the rest of the white hand bags. Available on net-a-porter.com, $4,000.

Zac Posen Patent Apple Clutch, Handbag of the Day

Sometimes I like a bag more for the name than anything else, and although this Zac Posen Patent Apple Clutch is certainly cute I think this is one of the those times -- "patent apple clutch" is just such a fun sounding title! Anyway, getting to the bag itself it's another patent leather variety but the glam of the shine is toned down somewhat by the earthiness of the poppy and midnight blue color options. Features include a kiss lock closure and suede lining, plus the front flap opens to reveal an extra pocket. $795

Celine Nautil Bag, Handbag of the Day

The Celine Nautil bag is about both bold bright fashion and practical functionality. Available in classic ruby red or crisp bright white, the Nautil is made of crinkled patent leather so it shines (but doesn't blind!). It also features contoured top seams, polished silver hardware, handles attached with clasps (8" drop), and my favorite handbag quality: a flat base so it sits upright. And the brand logo is everywhere on this bag: engraved onto the medallion on the front and on the studs used throughout, embossed on a leather tag inside, and incorporated into the pattern of the interior textile lining. $850

Sandstorm Kenya Safari Gear, Handbags of the Day

Safaris have such an adventurous and romantic connotation, and now Sandstorm Kenya (maker of luxury tents in Nairobi for camps in East Africa) is offering bags and travel accessories that make carrying that awesome safari vibe with you a reality in your daily life. There are 4 collections in their new set of offerings and so depending on what feel you're going for you can choose from the more casual Canvas & Cowhide, the soft Mocha Leather, the exclusive Camel & Cowhide, or the sophisticated Tweed & Cowhide. The collections include bags for everything from everyday use to travel totes -- and they even have one that functions as a champagne cooler. $125-$1100

A Handbag for Change

Are you suffering from campaign fatigue? Tired of seeing Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama duking it out on TV? Me too. But here's a bright spot: You can support the Democratic Party and make a fashion and political statement with the Change tote bag from Alexis Hudson. Company designers Rachelle Copeland and Emily Ironi teamed up with Los Angeles artist Greg Miller to create the bag.

"The Change bag is designed for everyone who believes in hope, change and the Democratic party," said Copland. "It's a real statement piece!" Ten percent of proceeds from the sale of the bag will support either Clinton's or Obama's race against John McCain. The bag will be available at alexishudsoninc.com for $95 starting in mid-May.

Alexis Hudson offers a range of really nice bags, though much more expensive than the Change bag, in the Spring '08 collection (see a few below).

"The Original" Leather Postal Messenger, Handbag of the Day

Although cutting edge style is always fun and plays an important role in fashion, there are some designs that just can't be improved upon. The original leather postal messenger bag is one of them, and now thanks to JCrew you can have one for yourself. Recreated in true-to-detail oil-tanned leather this bag is styled to be historically correct and match what U.S. postal workers carried from 1868 to the 1970s (when they switched over to blue nylon bags). Hand-oiled, hand-stained, hand-riveted, and sewn in the techniques of old, this bag will not only last a lifetime but it will get better and better as the years go by. $795

Chanel Vintage Shoulder Bag, Handbag of the Day

I love vintage Chanel bags, truly timeless, they never go out of style, if anything they seem to get more fabulous with each passing year! However they always sell out at vintage shops so it can be quite hard to get your hands on one, thankfully with the Internet, haute purse collecting has gotten easier. This black shoulder bag in patent leather crocodile print is one of the nicest collectible bags I've seen. Details include two outside pockets and a top zipper closure. It's available online for $4639! Pricey but well worth every penny.

The Dior Jazzclub Bag, Handbag of the Day

Straight off the runway comes the Dior Jazzclub Handbag Collection. I don't love these bags, but they are definitely unique and worth taking a peek at. Made of lambskin and available in black, beige, white, zebra and leopard, the jazzclub collection is recognizable by its unique large logo-engraved toggle closure and slouchy shape. The hardware is polished silver, which is refreshing after a few seasons of gold. Available on eluxury.com for $1,950.

YSL Downtown Computer Case

I've never fallen in love with a laptop bag but the stunning YSL Downtown Computer Case is in a league of it's own! Finely crafted in Italy from luxurious black patent leather, embellished with gold hardware featuring a sturdy working lock and key. And the bottom is stamped with a large YSL logo, so chic. The adjustable shoulder strap and double zipper closure offer convenience while the inside zip pocket keeps you organized. Did I mention I'm obsessed with this bag? Available on YSL.com for $1,795. I'm saving up!

Fendi Design Your Own Baguette

Has it really been ten years since the Fendi baguette? To celebrate the popular slim bag Fendi has released a new version in ten bright Pantone colors. They've also created a kit so you can create your own custom Fendi. The kit contains a bag of coated canvas with a removable belted shoulder strap with buckle attachments, polished gold metal logo-engraved appliqués on each side and an acrylic double-F logo on the front. The bag comes with ten Pantone Universe markers to create your own style on the bag. At $1,300, chose your design carefully, you can't return it once you start your creation.

Sir Hardy Amies' Signature Style

British couturier Hardy Amies, whose Savile Row shop opened back in 1946, is launching its first line of women's handbags this month. The new line comprises four key styles "inspired by traditional English luggage and the secret lives of female spies in the second world war," British Vogue reports. The theme is fitting since the dashing Sir Hardy himself, who died in 2003, was something of a real-life James Bond, serving as an officer in the British secret service during World War II. The bags, which start at about $1,600, each come with their own code name (and, we suspect, several hidden compartments).

Amies had an illustrious career as a couturier, designing clothes for everyone from Stanley Kubrick to the Queen of England. A self-described snob, he was a world authority on men's fashion, and his house carries on in high style. Among his many stylish epigrams, he once declared that "Luxury lies not in riches, but in the absence of vulgarity." Though he didn't live to see them, we think he probably would have approved of these bags bearing his name.

David Chu's Chic Take on Tumi

With his newly-released Fall 2008 collections for Tumi, Nautica founder David Chu is continuing the revitalization of the travel brand begun when he was named its creative director last year. Since his appointment, Chu has launched various new collections including the Alpha, using Tumi's signature black ballistic nylon, and the upscale Townhouse Collection for men. He has given the company an image makeover as well with new high-style ad campaigns featuring supermodel Shalom Harlow and an array of classic sportscars (see above).

For Fall 2008, Chu has made an appropriately seasonal modification to the spring Townhouse line, which featured khaki cotton twill and saddle leather. The Fall collection is rendered in a gray covert cloth that's a hallmark of classic British tailoring. As a counterpart, he has introduced new designs for women as well. We're also big fans of Chu's eponymous luxury menswear line, which he started after VF Corp. acquired Nautica for $585 million in 2004. Obviously Chu, who personally made over $100 million on the deal, could have just retired then and there, but we're definitely glad he decided to keep working.
