Louis Kahn House Up For Auction

Louis Kahn only designed 3 major architectural homes in his career and one of them, the Escherick House (named after the woman for whom it was built, Margaret Escherick) is up for auction. Its address is in Philadelphia and according to some it's his best residential creation and has "mature style" and a "warm and human quality" to the interior (and I tend to agree).

So the house will be sold, but unlike most houses its price will not only reflect the local regular real estate market but also the art market. Valued at $2 million only about half of that is unbiased structural and land values -- the rest is all artistic and historical sentiment.

LeBron James Plans A Massive Home

The word "massive" really has its work cut out when it comes to describing the new house basketball player LeBron James is building himself and plans to move into next summer. In addition to absolutely "massive" living spaces like a two-story walk-in closet off the master suite, and not only a huge "great room" but an even bigger "grand room" as well, James really outdoes himself (and the rest of the neighborhood) with a casino, a bowling alley, and a barbershop included in the over 35,000 sq feet of house plans.

Throw in a Starbucks and a gas station and he can upgrade from "massive home" to "small town."

Can Zillow Be Trusted?

Free online real estate estimates, such as the Zestimates provided by Zillow.com, are a boon to many home buyers. They provide fast, hassle-free estimates of homes all over, with the intention of giving shoppers an idea of what's available before they even head out to look in person. According to the Wall Street Journal, however, Zillow isn't quite as reliable as it seems to be, given the fact that it gives prices down to the dollar, not just round-number estimates. For instance, it listed a 7,600-sq. ft. home in Fall City, WA at $661,756, but the home sold in January for over $2.5 million. The Northbrook, Il. house pictured was pegged at $450,000, but sold for nearly double. And the errors can go the other way, as well, with an El Cerrito, CA house selling for $80,000, though its estimate was over $500,000.

Zillow tries to keep things as accurate as possible, of course, but the bottom line is that it is best to take their estimates with more than a grain of salt just in case the 5% error you are expecting turns out to be 50%.

Chinqua-Penn Plantation, Estate of the Day

Not far from where I grew up in North Carolina was an extravagant old house named Chinqua-Penn that was periodically open to the public. Inside, treasures from the former owner's world travels lined the halls and rooms. It was a mansion built with tobacco money in the roaring twenties and at 31,000 square feet, was far from cramped. Located in Reidsville, 20 miles north of Greensboro, Chinqua-Penn is set amid the rolling farmland of North Carolina's Piedmont region. The house had been given to the University of North Carolina and it opened the house to the public. Budgetary constraints caused the house to be closed in 2002 and now the University is selling the house to fund scholarships. The house is an eclectic mish-mash of styles and sits on 23 acres of landscaped gardens. Of the numerous notable features is the Chinese Pagoda pool house and the clock tower with chimes. The house is being offered either with or without the massive collection of furniture and art that tacks an extra $2 million onto the asking price. Don't let this fantastic home fall into evil hands!

Hugh Hates His Houses

Apparently, Hugh Grant hates all of the 17 "horrible houses" he owns in London. He seems to keep buying the places, deciding that they are "not very nice" and moving on to buy another. One has to wonder if Hugh knows that there are people in business to prevent this sort of situation. He could call an interior decorator to redesign the homes or a contractor to gut the buildings and start over fresh. He could also call a real estate agent and sell some of the properties. The properties include a $9 million bachelor pad, which doubles as an office for his production company, but it sounds as though he might want to keep that one.

Titicus Reservoir Views, Estate of the Day

This home in Westchester Country, New York offers views over the Titicus Reservoir from almost every room. The 17,000 square foot estate has eight bedrooms including a master suite with his and her bathrooms. The home also has two pools, an indoor pool and an outdoor pool that is part on an entertainment area that has its own kitchen. There is a separate staff quarters with a kitchen that could also be a guest suite. There is room for another guest suite over the six car garage. The home was built in 1990 and sits on nearly 34 acres so it offers plenty of privacy. Someone went a little too crazy with the trompe l'oiel paintbrush, especially in the kitchen but the home has lavish details including stone fireplaces and columns. It is listed at $10.9 million. Interior shots after the jump.

Lion's Gate, Estate of the Day

California? Nope, it just looks that way. Lion's Gate is a 20-acre estate in Brookville, New York. Currently listed by Daniel Gale, the agent who has listed so many of our faves including Northwood and Kenjockety, this relatively new mansion has Napa style in an East Coast setting. The house was finished in 2000 and has six bedrooms over 9,600 square feet. The property also has a pool, barn and paddock. The land with plenty of open fields and woodlands, has "partitioning potential" for the would-be developer.  It's got a great looking wine cellar but otherwise the design is a bit ordinary. It is listed at at $11.5 million. Interior shots after the jump including what looks to be a strangely forbidding all-wood office.
